TRES Retriever Report December 8, 2023

Fri, 12/08/2023 - 10:12am

Message from Dr. TRESler and Mr. Hiel:

Dear Retriever Families,

This week was full of celebrations with Inclusive Schools Week and The Hour of Code. Inclusive Schools Week highlights and celebrates the progress schools have made in providing a supportive and quality education for all students, including those who are marginalized due to disability, gender, ethnicity, geography or language. It also provides an important opportunity for educators, students, and families to discuss what else needs to be done to ensure that schools continue to improve their ability to successfully educate all children. This week we celebrated our inclusive community by strengthening our commitment to inclusive education and ensuring that everyone at TRES feels like they belong! Together we created a display celebrating all of the great things that happen in our inclusive school!

All students also participated in the Hour of Code Celebration and Computer Science Education Week. The Hour of Code, created by Code.org, is a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify code and show that everyone can learn the basics. Ask your child what they learned about coding and computer science this week. We also encourage you to check out the posters around school featuring students and staff sharing how they use computer science.

Warmly,
Dr. Tiffany TRESler, Principal TRES
Mr. Kory Hiel, Assistant Principal TRES

The Howard County Literacy Association invites students in grades 1-5 to submit their original poems and/or short stories to the annual writing contest called The Young Authors' Contest. Please see the attached Young Authors’ Contest Guidelines for rules and submission requirements. All entries must have a completed YAC Cover Sheet sent as a PDF. Submissions (and cover sheets) may be emailed to our TRES Reading Specialist, Lauren Rifkin at lauren_rifkin@hcpss.org by December 11, 2023. In order to allow time for judging to take place to submit our winning school entries to the HCPSS level of competition, late entries cannot be accepted. All TRES student participants and winners will be recognized at a spring Authors’ Tea. Please feel free to email Mrs. Rifkin with any questions. Young Authors’ Contest information can also be found on the HCLA website.

Howard County Literacy Association welcomes parents as members.  Visit the HCLA Welcome Page  for information about joining.

Cold Weather Reminder
As cold winter weather approaches, we want to remind you that students will still be going outside for recess. Please make sure you send your child to school with warm clothes. All clothing should be labeled with your child's name. Below you will find the HCPSS criteria we consider when having outdoor activities.

  • Temperature and humidity
  • Wind chill
  • Heat index and air quality
  • Age of students
  • Length of time outdoors
  • Adequacy of the children’s clothing
  • Condition of the playground
  • Falling precipitation (more than a sprinkle or mist)
  • Thunder and lightning

Generally, it is assumed that students will be outside for recess, physical education, or any other outdoor activity when the temperature combined with the wind chill is not less than 20 degrees Fahrenheit or the heat index reading is less than 95.
